I reinstalled Debian on my machine a few weeks ago. I had recently been playing Diablo 2 on my old installation, using wine from the winehq.org repo. Everything ran flawlessly with no trouble.

  • Diablo II Backup Tool v2.0. This is a tool that lets you comfortably backup and restore all your open/single Diablo 2 characters. Use this backup tool to: - Protection against accidental deletion. Backup before you face end bosses to save money you would loose from dying. Backup before you try something out (GAMBLING).
  • The.d2s file is the only one that's essential - that includes all of your character data, item data, and so on. You may also want to keep the.key file if you've made any changes to hotkeys and so on - that file keeps track of your key mappings, so if they're very different you may want to retain them.

In your Diablo II folder there should be a folder called 'save'. Copy that entire file into your backup device. As for your ATMA stashes, just copy the entire folder where you keep your stashes to your backup device.

After a clean reinstall of Debian and wine, the same installation of Diablo 2 (on a separate drive) would no longer play. After fruitless efforts to fix it, I deleted the old Diablo 2 installation and reinstalled it, with the very same results.
When I run the video test (D2VidTst.exe) I am now told 'No Video Modes Found', whereas before, I had a choice between DirectDraw and Direct3D. (I have also reinstalled the propriety NVidia driver, as before, and it seems to be working correctly.) If I try to run the game anyway, I get this in the console:
Code: Select all
fixme:win:EnumDisplayDevicesW ((null),0,0x34e474,0x00000000), stub!
err:x11settings:X11DRV_ChangeDisplaySettingsEx No matching mode found 640x480x8 @0! (XRandR)

followed by a popup box saying:
Code: Select all
Error 22: A critical error has occurred while initializing DirectDraw.

I realize there's a lot on the net about this game, but on the linux/wine posts regard TCP/IP problems or CD-detection. I haven't found anything to address this particular concern. Perhaps I'm not using the right search terms.... Anyway, help would be appreciated! Here are some of the best Diablo2: Lord of Destruction hacked characters / save games, for Single Player and Open Battle.net that i found.
Instructions
  1. Download the savegame you like.
  2. Extract the savegame from the .rar archive, you can use Winrar or 7-Zip for this.
  3. Move the savegame file (.d2s) from the folder to your Diablo 2 savegame folder, usually something like:
    C:Program Files (x86)Diablo IIsave
  4. Thats it, your done.
