The rewards of reciting the four Quls

The Messenger of Allah – SallAllahu alayhi wa sallam – said: “O Ibn Aabis, shall I tell you about the best protection used by those who seek it.”

He said: Yes, O Messenger of Allah.

He (PBUH) said: “Say, I seek refuge in the Lord of the daybreak.” and ‘Say, I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind.’ It is included in these two surahs.” [Abu Dawood]

Aisha (RA) reported that whenever the Prophet – SallAllahu alayhi wa sallam – went to bed every night, he used to cup his hands together and blow over them after reciting surah Al-Ikhlas, Surah Al-Falaq and Surah An-Nas and then rub his hands over whatever parts of his body he was able to rub, starting with his head, face and front of his body. He used to do that three times. [Bukhari]

Al-Bukhaari (6643) narrated from Abu Sa’eed that a man heard another man reciting Qul Huwa Allaahu Ahad and repeating it. The next morning he came to the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and told him about that. The man thought that it was too little, but the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “By the One in Whose hand is my soul, it is equivalent to one-third of the Quran.”

Whoever recites these three Surahs three times in the morning and in the evening, they will suffice him against everything. [Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi]

Surah Al-Ikhlas

Muadh bin Anas (May Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said, “Whoever recites (Qul Hu Allahu Ahad) ten times, Allah will build for him a house in Paradise.”

Its recitation is compared to reciting a third of the Holy Quran.

It is narrated from the Holy Prophet (PBUH) that whoever recites this Surah once will get the reward equal to ten times the number of people who have believed in the Islamic teachings.

Surah An-Nas

Surah an-Nas and al-Falaq are together called Maudhatayn. Imam Jafar as-Sadiq (AS) said, whoever recites this surah in his house every night, will be kept safe from Jinn and the evil of Shaitan.

Reciting the Maudhatayn before sleeping is a means of safety and if recited on any part of the body that is paining, the pain will be relieved.

Surah Al-Falaq

The Prophet (PBUH) used to seek refuge from the jinn as well as from the evil eye until Surah al Falaq and An Naas were revealed. When they were sent down, he utilized them and left other things. (Tirmidhi 1984 )

It is narrated by the Holy Prophet (PBUH) that whoever recites this Surah in the month of Ramadan in any of his prayers; it is as if he has fasted in Makah and he will get the reward for performing Hajj and Umrah.

According to one riwaayah “Recite these two Surahs (Surah Falaq and Surah Nas) when you go to sleep and when ‘you wake up”.

Surah Al-Kafiroun

The Prophet (SAW) said, “Recite Surah Al- Kafiroon and then go to sleep after coming to its end, for it is a clearance from shirk”. (Abu Dawud 4396)

If a person dies after reciting this Surah, it is as if he has died as a martyr.

Recitation of this Surah before sleeping keeps one safe the whole night.

What Are The Four Quls of the Quran?

The four quls are just four surahs (chapters) of the Quran that begin with the word Qul. These four surahs are:

  1. Surah Ikhlas
  2. Surah Al-Kafirun
  3. Surah Nas
  4. Surah Falaq

These surahs are among the shortest surahs in the entire Quran making them relatively easy to memorize. They are 4-6 ayats (lines) long. Below you can read the four quls with English translation and in Arabic. We will also cover the hadith that discusses the virtues or benefits that the reciter will received for saying these surahs.

First Qul of Quran is Surah Al Kafirun

Surah Kafirun is the 109th chapter of Quran. It consists of a total of 6 ayats. Here’s Arabic text, transliteration and translation:

The Second Qul – Surah Ikhlas

The 2nd Qul is Surah Ikhlas, the 112th Surah of the Quran and it’s English meaning is “Fidelity” or “Sincerity”. It is shorter than Kafirun with only 4 ayats.

The 3 Quls – Surah Al Falaq

The third Qul of Quran is Surah Falaq which is the second last surah of the Quran. This surah is often recited for those looking to seek refuge in Allah, away from Shaitan. It consists of a total of 5 ayats.

The 4th Qul – Surah An Nas

The fourth and final Qul of the Quran is Surah An-Nas, it is also the last chapter of the Qur’an. It consists of 6 ayats which you can read below.

Virtues and Benefits According to Hadith

The Four Quls are known as the protecting Surahs. Surah Al-Kafiroun and Al-Ikhlas protect from shirk. Surah Falaq and Nas protect from us from Jinn, black magic and the whispering of the shaitan.

Hadith on Surah Ikhlas and Kafirun:

It was narrated that Ibn ‘Umar said: “I watched the Prophet (pbuh) for a month, and in the two Rak’ah before Fajr he used to recite: “Say: O you disbelievers!” [Al-Kafirun (109)] and “Say: Allah is One.” [Al- Ikhlas (112)] Grade : Hasan (Darussalam) English reference : Vol. 1, Book 5, Hadith 1149

The Prophet (ﷺ) said to his companions, “Is it difficult for any of you to recite one third of the Qur’an in one night?” This suggestion was difficult for them so they said, “Who among us has the power to do so, O Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ)?” Allah Apostle replied: ” Allah (the) One, the Self-Sufficient Master Whom all creatures need.’ (Surat Al-Ikhlas 112.1 – to the End) is equal to one third of the Qur’an.” (Reference: Sahih Al-Bukhari 5015)
