So, I'm becoming an F3 system fanboy, and I want to play around w/ ripping some sprites from these games. I've heard that Final Burn Alpha can toggle layers, which would be ideal, but does FBA run in conjunction w/ Mame or what? I downloaded FBA v0.2.95.23 (cm).zip and it's just .DAT files, which I have no clue where to put
Any help would rule.

In MAME, if you press F4 you enter the “Tile Viewer” - from there you can see palettes, character sets and - depending on the game - sprites. Let’s say you want to rip the sprites from Commando, by Capcom 1985 (I picked that game because I love it. Step #1: When you are playing mame if you press left shift button and f12 it records an animated gif. Pressing it again will stop the recording. This is how you rip your sprites very easily.Once you got what you want and you stopped recording it will save to your mame snapshots folder.

what's an F3? Some kind of Japan-only system?
The way I rip spites is I turn the background layers off and take frame-by-frame snapshots. Tedious, but it works for me.

Using what emulator setup, though? That's my problem. F3 is a Taito arcade system.

The F3 is a totally boss piece of arcade hardware made by a totally boss company called Taito.
Speaking of which, undamned, is it possible for you to photograph the cart for that monkey breakout game? Because it sounds totally boss and I probably want one

I was talking about emulators in general. Most of them have a feature where you can turn off the background layers so only the sprites show.
Sorry if I confused you. I know nothing about F3 emulation.

MAME and FBA are actually entirely separate projects. You should download the emulator from its homepage here. The (cm) in that .zip file name you posted leads me to believe that those .dat files are for a program called ClrMamePro, used to manage rom files for various emulators. I've actually never toyed with Final Burn Alpha, but hopefully it emulates F3, and with sprite/background layer toggling (of which F3 hardware has a large number).

It's a Kaneko Super Nova cart, but yeah, I can shoot a pic of it. By far the greatest intro song ever. Little kids singing in Japanese.

Just dl'd that binary and it doesn't support F3 Poopie.

What games are you trying to rip sprites from? I'm not finding any F3-specific BIOS' on Maws, though I don't know if it's seperate.

Well hell....that's easy then. You can use Mame for all of those. No need for anything else, really.

Hah, I was watching that auction too (mainly interested in puzz loop). Doesn't that breakout type game require a spinner though?

Negative. Puzzloop is genius, by the way. I also have the sequel on CPS2, but I havn't found the option to change from spinner to joy, though.

F4 is just a tile viewer, isn't it? Maybe it's possible to piece together sprites from that, I have no idea, seems like it would be a hassle to do.
I think the only way to disable layers in F3 (and most other drivers) in MAME is to actually modify the source to not draw the background planes in the F3 driver and recompile MAME... sorry.

For some of the F3 games which run in Raine, I think Raine will do the trick. F5-59 turn on and off the object and background layer

Sorry to bring this off topic, but by the look of the instructions, it is supposed to use a spinner, so you have the game and can confirm it will also work with a joystick?

[update] Just tried out the rom in mame, yep requires a paddle. Its semi playable with a joystick in mame. I wonder how the paddle connects to the pcb? [/update]

Dude, don't base things you havn't tried, first hand, off of emulation. You are one of the sickest hardware guys on the forums, so you should know what's up! Yes, I own the PCB, and yes it plays perfect on my Namco EX1 (yes, the same machine as yours). If you call slow movement 'semi playable' then you should be delighted to know that one of the neatest non-standard breakout clone features, in the game, is a jump button, which allows you to hop across the screen at a greater rate than just standard scrolling.
